The best workout for you based on your Enneagram type

Anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with the Enneagram Test. I think it’s so helpful for learning about people’s individual personalities, desires and challenges. If you’re looking to start or switch up your fitness routine, finding something that aligns with your Enneagram type might be a great place to start. Of course, the workout format that you enjoy and keeps you consistent is the best for you, so these are just fun suggestions.

  • Enneagram 1 (The Reformer): Pilates
This type is known for being principled, purposeful, self-controlled and perfectionistic. Pilates has a lot of targeted core, upper and lower body work, which requires control, alignment and precision. As an Enneagram 1, you will appreciate the attention to detail and structured format of Pilates, with a focus on proper form and technique.

  • Enneagram 2 (The Helper): Partner Running
This type is known for being generous, demonstrative, people-pleasing and possessive. Enneagram 2s thrive in social settings and get energy from interacting with other people. Running with a friend provides an opportunity to build and strengthen relationships while still moving your body.

  • Enneagram 3 (The Achiever): Weightlifting
This type is known for being adaptable, excelling, driven and image-conscious. Enneagram 3s like activities where they set goals to meet and exceed. With weightlifting, you can actually measure how you’re increasing in strength over time, competing with yourself to go bigger and harder in your workouts.

  • Enneagram 4 (The Individualist): Dance Fitness
This type is known for being expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed and temperamental. Dance fitness (Zumba, hip hop, burlesque/pole, etc.) is a way for Enneagram 4s to channel their emotions into physical movement. Dancing gives you an outlet to express yourself authentically and connect with your inner creativity. Plus, these classes are rarely ever the same twice, which can be fun and exciting if you enjoy unique experiences.

  • Enneagram 5 (The Investigator): Swimming
This type is known for being perceptive, innovative, secretive and isolated. Enneagram 5s appreciate doing things on their own, allowing time for deep thought and reflection. The rhythmic motion of swimming can be soothing and help provide mental clarity, working both the mind and body in harmony.

  • Enneagram 6 (The Loyalist): Cycling
This type is known for being engaging, responsible, anxious and suspicious. The structured format of cycling offers a predictable and “safe” environment for Enneagram 6s. Whether it’s an outdoor ride or a cycling class, the workout tends to be repetitive, so you’ll feel challenged, while also feeling grounded and protected.

  • Enneagram 7 (The Enthusiast): Hiking
This type is known for being spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, scattered. Getting outdoors is always a great option for an Enneagram 7, and hiking adds a sense of adventure to your workout. The change in scenery and challenges of different trails will keep you engaged and energized.

  • Enneagram 8 (The Challenger): Kickboxing
This type is known for being self-confident, decisive, willful and confrontational. Kickboxing is a perfect outlet for Enneagram 8s to channel their assertive energy and strength. The intensity of kickboxing classes will help you hone in on your competitiveness and desire to succeed.

  • Enneagram 9 (The Peacemaker): Yoga
This type is known for being receptive, reassuring, agreeable and complacent. Yoga is a gentle and effective way to connect with your body and mind. Enneagram 9s are often seeking harmony and relaxation, and this format will help you to foster mindfulness and self-awareness.
