So you didn’t hit your 2022 fitness goal. Now what?

As 2022 comes to a close, many of us are taking the time to reflect on the last year. Some of you may be looking back with pride at all you were able to accomplish, while others may be feeling disappointed and discouraged.

I really wanted to do X this year, but just didn’t have the time is something I hear over and over. No matter what, there just never seems to be enough time in the day to do everything we need and want to do. Something always gets pushed to the back burner, and, unfortunately, that’s usually our own health.

If you had big hopes for 2022 and it just didn’t work out, I’d venture to guess that it’s because you set an unrealistic, impossible schedule. Many New Year’s resolutions fail because the goals people set aren’t specific or realistic for their lifestyle. As a busy working mom, I understand just how hard it is to find time for yourself and the things you love. In order to prioritize your health, you have to be strategic and intentional about it.

If at the beginning of the year, you made the commitment to exercise 7 days a week, I can see why it didn’t stick. If you expected to work out for at least an hour each session, again, I see the problem. You’ve got to start smaller and make a commitment that you can actually stick to.

In 2023, start with the commitment to exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes. Once you’ve done that for 6 weeks and it feels manageable, add in another day. You can also increase the time if you’d like, but I think it’s absolutely possible to get a great workout in 30 minutes if you plan it right. Remember that traditional exercise isn’t the only thing that counts either. You can get creative with different types of movement, like a family walk after dinner or playing sports with your kids.

Consistency is much more important that perfection. I’d rather you show up and do your workout 3 times a week (even if it’s not your best), than absolutely kill it once a week.

If you need help setting your goals, I’m here to help. Shoot me a message or we can set up a 30-minute 1:1 coaching call.

Don’t beat yourself up about 2022. January is right around the corner, and it’s a chance to start fresh with a doable schedule and SMART (strategic, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) goals that I believe you CAN meet.
